Port of Houston
Submitted by Mike Mitchum, Regional Manager
URS Corp./Cleveland Wrecking Company

Project Overview

These photos were taken from a recently completed project at the Port of Houston. URS Corp. was awarded the contract to take down an old Brownhoist Crane that was erected in 1964 and idled in 1985. It was 217 feet tall and weighed 480 tons. It was in a very tight area and was almost ready to fall down by itself.

The crane was taken down in 4 pieces and hauled to an area where shears were waiting to downsize it. The sections weighed 50 Tons (boom); 30 tons (gantry), 300 tons (main structure) and 100 tons (undercarriage).

Mike Mitchum, regional manager at URS, writes, "That this was one of those projects that took more time to plan than it did to actually do the work. The logistics were interesting also inasmuch as we had to deal with a very active shipping season."
