Demolition of Weyerhaeuser Paper Machine, Staton Companies

September 2002. Demolition of the No. 1 Paper Machine is under way at Weyerhaeuser Company’s Springfield, OR plant.

Staton Companies, of Eugene, OR, was selected to perform the project. Ron Richey, a Staton partner, says crews have completed peripheral demolition, utility disconnects and “gapping” work, and are currently 50% into the cast iron and cast steel machine which weighs in at over 3600 tons. The next phase is the wet end of the machine, which is all 304 and 316 Stainless Steel (200,000 pounds), and for obvious reasons needs to be processed separately. The two final steps are removal of the 605 foot long concrete & steel building, and the removal of 10 clay tile, concrete and steel process tanks which supplied the liquid pulp for the machine.

The project is complicated by being in the middle of an operational paper mill, with active utilities as close as 1.5 feet to the structures being demolished. Staton expects to complete demolition in late November 2002.
